This is the land of the misused word "literally".Use of the word "literally" to try to emphasise a simile or metaphor. "He was literally caught with his trousers down" was he? "The
college I attended was literally on my doorstep" that's close! Use of the word "literally" to make you think the speaker has just used a cleaver simile or metaphor. "It will literally be complete in two hours" what other
meaning of two hours did he think he was using? An odd category - where half of the phrase makes sense but the whole does not. "Literally driving a tank through a promise" - The tank was literal and its use broke an agreement but... "Literally send the heating bills through the roof" - The heat itself was literally escaping through an uninsulated roof but the bills were not. Just plain wrong (BBC quotes!) "Looking for the cells in her brain was literally like finding a needle in a haystack". If you have any "literally" quotes please send them to literally@disco-nt.co.uk. |
